Hello world!
My name is Kirk, and I'm creating simulation games which are designed to give players an empathetic experience into the trials and tribulations of living with mental illnesses.
My journey into game dev started at a very young age, where I became enthralled by the creative possibilities of code. Since then, I've released dozens of indie games online.
Unfortunately my life hasn't been all fun and games. When I turned 25 I was diagnosed with Bipolar Type 1 disorder, meaning I struggle with a condition called "mania." When I'm ill, this takes the shape of an unstable, overclocked sense of energy, going days without sleep, and mind bending delusions of grandeur.
Several times over, I've had to "reset" my life so-to-speak.
However for me, living with these conditions is only part of the struggle. The bigger issue at play is the lack of understanding from my friends, family, and colleagues. This lack of understanding frequently translates into stigmatization, prejudice, and a feeling that I'm not sick, but am a fundamentally flawed person.
And I'm not alone.
I've been lucky enough to meet an incredible array of people struggling with disorders like mine, as well as people with other disorders that are just as misunderstood. And that's really the common theme amongst us all. A feeling of being misunderstood and judged.
I feel that given my unique skillset paired with my experience with the world of mental health, it is my duty to do something about this.
If what you've read here today speaks to you, I would be honoured to have you join me on this journey, and maybe one day we'll all love each other for the things makes us unique.
